Meat of the Tongue: Seductive Stories at Suppertime

What comes after supper and before that which comes after? Stories that stimulate the senses; that speak of flowers and fragrance, roses and rage, wayward journeys and finding your way home.  Start with a simple, delicious Asian dinner, then sit back and relax with dessert and coffee as storytellers Chuah Ai Lin, Denise Bertrand and Kamini Ramachandran from the Storytelling Association (Singapore) indulge you in ways you have not considered, yet.

A Storytelling Performance for adult audiences aged 18 and above

About the Tellers:

- Chuah Ai Lin, whose passions include nature and heritage, tells all kinds of tantalizing tales in all kinds of weather and in some rather unusual places.

- Denise Bertrand has come from distant lands and traveled across the far seas to have a continuous love affair with Asia. Her searching heart always has a tale to tell.

- Kamini Ramachandran, current President of the Association and co-founder of MoonShadow Stories, has opened the world of storytelling to new adult audiences in Singapore.

Free Storytelling for Children at SAFRA (Toa Payoh)

Dates: First Sunday of every month until December 2008

Tellers from the Asian Storytelling Network will take turns to tell stories for children.

The Lunar Interviews  by Verena Tay

Through seven monologues, The Lunar Interviews interweaves real life vignettes and moon goddess myths—Chang Er, Diana, Hina—exploring the themes of creation, nurturing, writing, men-women relationships, solitude, loneliness, exile and the Moon. Provocative and captivating, The Lunar Interviews humanises the mythic and brings the mythic into everyday reality.

The Lunar Interviews is one of four plays being produced under the umbrella called Blood Binds by Magdalena (Singapore) and The Substation as part of W!ld Rice's OCBC Singapore Theatre Festival 2008.

 19 June 2008: Five SAS Ordinary and Associate members told stories to 300 children on SMRT's 'Tales on Trains' event. They were Juriah Atan, Ignatius Ng, Heather Reutens, Rosemarie Somaiah and Helen Tan.

 During Feb and Mar 2008, various SAS Ordinary Members told stories on radio at 938LIVE on Mondays, 10 to 11 am, in 'The Living Room' programme. The schedule of appearances were as follows:

 8 Mar 2008: Masak-Masak: A Potluck of Delectable Stories from Around the World, storytelling for children and adults at The Lab, Republic Cultural Centre, Republic Polytechnic. The afternoon programme was a special charity event for child beneficiaries of the Tan Chin Tuan Foundation. - The evening programme was open to the public. The 120-seater Lab was filled for both shows.

 17–18 Sep 2007: Workshop by Laura Simms on Healing Stories, attended by 6 Ordinary Members and 11 Associate Members

 7 Sep 2007: SAS participated in SMRT/National Library Board's Annual Tales on Trains event. Associate Members Jessie Goh and Dolly Leow as well as Ordinary Members Ignatius Ng and Jim Gan told stories to 280 children from Kembangan to Woodlands MRT Stations.

 1 May 2007: In the Merry Month of May: A Celebration of Storytelling, SAS' 2nd annual storytelling performance event for families. Held at the Asian Civilisations Museum Auditorium; attended by 44 adults and 46 children.

 13 Apr 2007: 3rd Story Swap at Dramaplus Arts Studio

 4, 11, 18 & 25 Mar 2007; 3.30–4 pm: Storytelling for Kids, as part of the NUS Arts Festival 2007. Each Sunday, 1 Ordinary Member paired up with 1 Associate Member to tell stories.

 27 Jan 2007: a) 1st SAS Annual General Meeting attended by 11 Ordinary Members, and observed by 13 Associate Members, 2 Friends and 1 Guest/Observer.
b) 2nd Story Swap attended by Ordinary and Associate Members and observed by Friends.
Both events were held at The Substation classrooms.

 30 Aug9 Sep 2006: SAS helped organise and execute the 1st Singapore International Storytelling Festival.

 14 May 2006: On Mothers’ Day, SAS publicly launched itself with Let’s Celebrate, a two-hour performance for families, featuring stories told by the committee members. We filled all 182 seats in the Asian Civilisations Museum Auditorium.

I really enjoyed the storytelling sessions by members of the Association. The one on Mother's Day was thoroughly enjoyable, my daughters and niece are still telling others the stories and sometimes acting them out!”
